چکیده

This paper reports tests of the hypothesis that a 10 mse-c. 667 nm. fovea1 teSt flash, presented upon a steady, 8” background, is detected by a pathway whose sensitivity is monotonically related io a linear functional of photoreceptor quantum catch. The hypothesis is tested by (1) measuring incrementthreshold curves for various background wavelenghts, and (2) measuring threshold upon mixtures of two backgrounds with different wavelengths. The data are consistent, within measurement error, with the hypothesis. We argue, on grounds of plausibility, that the pathway’s sensitivity to the 10 msec test flash is controlled not by an arbitrary linear functional, but by the quantum catch of a single class of photoreceptors.

Detection of long-duration, long-wavelength incremental flashes by a chromatically coded pathway.

Abatwt-This paper reports tests of the hypothesis that a 200 msec 667 nm, fovea1 test Rash, presented upon a steady, 8” background, is detected by a pathway whose sensitivity is monotonically related to a Iinear functional of photoreceptor quantum catch. The measurement conditions used in this paper are the same as those used by Stiles in his n-mechanism analysis. The hypothesis is tested by me...

The Temporal Neighborhood Effect: the Perceived Brightness, Duration, and Size of a Flash Can Be Modified by Temporal Properties of Its Neighbors

It is known that the perceived brightness of an object depends on spatial relationships with its neighbors (e.g., simultaneous contrast). We here examined whether the perceived brightness of a briefly flashed object depends on TEMPORAL relationships with its neighbors. Two flashes appeared separated by a fixation point: one lasted for 56 ms ('brief'), the other for 278 ms ('long'). Observers re...

Violation of Bloch's Law that specifies reciprocity of intensity and duration with brief light flashes

For more than a century researchers have been reporting that the visual impact of a very brief flash is determined by the quantity of photons that the flash delivers. This has been variously described as the Bunsen-Roscoe Law or Bloch's Law, often specified as reciprocity of intensity × duration. Prior research found no evidence for such reciprocity when microsecond-duration flashes from a ligh...

Effects of priming flash parameters and dark interval on red-induced afterpotential in Balanus photoreceptors

The sequence (a) priming flash, (b) dark interval, and (c) red light induces a long-lasting afterdepolarization (PDA) in Balanus photoreceptors. The inward flow of membrane current associated with the decay of PDA was independent of red test flashes, provided that PDA had plateaued at a particular intensity. The influence of wavelength and duration of the priming flash and their interaction wit...

Effects of Spectral Characteristics of Ganzfeld Stimuli on the Photopic Negative Response (PhNR) of the ERG.

PURPOSE To determine flash and background colors that best isolate the photopic negative response (PhNR) and maximize its amplitude in the primate ERG. METHODS Photopic full-field flash ERGs were recorded from anesthetized macaque monkeys before and after pharmacologic blockade of Na(+)-dependent spiking activity with tetrodotoxin (TTX, 1 to 2 muM, n = 3), blockade of ionotropic glutamatergic...
